2016年，《云南亚洲象国家公园总体规划》报交国家层面审批；2019年第一批国家公园体制试点名单公布前，云南还将改革试点方案上报了中央深改委建立国家公园体制试点领导小组。但至此，亚洲象国家公园仍未得以落地。2021年1月，云南省林草局在文件中提出，面向2025年的发展目标是，“亚洲象国家公园列入全国国家公园规划布局”。
